Episode Three: Guard the Temple and Judge What Defiles It. Wisdom distinguishes forbidden judgment from necessary judgment.
One. Chapter four forbids judging the servants of God by fleshly preference;
chapter five commands judgment against servants of sin whose conduct defiles Christ’s Body.
Do not confuse the two.
Two. The Church must judge itself and remove those who persist in fornication, idolatry, and other deadly sins that pollute the fellowship.
Paul, though absent in body, was present in spirit and joined that church in judging the offender.
Three. A little leaven changes the whole lump.
Adding sweetness to unleavened bread corrupts what represents the Holy Communion;
likewise, tolerating deadly sin in a congregation defiles the whole assembly.
Remember how Achan’s sin affected all Israel.
Four. Chapter six therefore requires the Church to possess judges capable of settling matters among brethren
instead of carrying brother against brother before secular law courts.
Five. Then the teaching strikes the centre of the body: food is for the stomach and the stomach for food, but God will destroy both.
The body is not for fornication; it is for the Lord, and the Lord is for the body.
First Corinthians 6:13.
Six. Flee fornication. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but fornication is a sin against one’s own body.
Seven. Your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit whom you received from God.
You are not your own; you were bought with a price.
Eight. Therefore glorify God in both body and spirit.
The body is not private property for appetite; it is a purchased sanctuary belonging to the Lord. First Corinthians 6:18–20.
