Why does the idea of eternal suffering in hell seem to contradict being dead?

ANSWER:
The misunderstanding comes from defining death as lifelessness, motionlessness, disappearance, vanity, or non-existence. That is not the spiritual or true meaning of death. To be dead simply means to be detached, severed, disconnected, cast out, or fallen from the height of a body’s essence or source of life. Death is disconnection, not disappearance. Death is separation, not non-existence.
